The Villa Park groundstaff impressed us all once again as the Villans ran out on the hallowed turf for the first time this season.
Dean Smith’s men started brightly, especially down the right hand-side with new signing Matty Cash swinging in some enticing crosses on his competitive debut.
After just twelve minutes the game turned on its head as the Blades’ captain John Egan was shown a red-card after pulling down record-signing Ollie Watkins.
Villa failed to catch out Chris Wilder’s men and on 33 minutes Matt Targett brought down Chris Basham in the box and a penalty was rightly upheld after a lengthy VAR review.
Another debutant was now in the limelight, step up Emiliano Martínez. The new signing dived brillianlty to his right to push John Lundstram’s spot-kick around the post.
With the Blades sitting back, Villa were struggling to create clear cut chances but after 63 minutes the seemingly injured Ezri Konsa nodded in the winning goal after a flick-on from defensive partner Tyrone Mings.
Villa’s stand-out performers were Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martínez and Matty Cash. The midfield still needs bolstering if last season is anything to go by, but a home win on the opening game of the season leaves little room for complaints.
A confident victory for Dean Smith’s men puts them in good shape for Thursday’s trip to Ashton Gate and Monday’s journey to Craven Cottage.
