Box to Box: Aston Villa’s Midfield Trio to Fire Villa to the Premier League

I’ve had enough of the negativity around the club, there are plenty of reasons for us Villa fans to be optimistic and looking forward ahead to next season.

Whilst there is plenty of speculation that our beloved ‘Super’ Jack Grealish will leave to balance the books, this isn’t the end of the world. Firstly I would like to say I am a huge fan of Jack, and I want nothing more than for him to stay and help us in our promotion push! But… If he was to go, let’s not panic about our midfield.

Not so long ago I put put a Tweet calling for Bruce to release the shackles on players such as Birkir Bjarnson, Henri Lansbury and Conor Hourihane, it’s safe to say plenty of you agreed with me. I’m fairly confident these three would run the show for us next season… If Bruce lets them play their football.

The Anchorman:

Birkir Bjarnson, not only does he have the best hair in the division, but he’s easily our best central midfielders in my opinion. Though he came in as a left midfielder/winger, he simply isn’t quick enough to run down the flank, but his classy touch of the ball and control he has makes for a perfect central midfielder.

Birkir reignited his career at Villa earlier on in the year where he became a revelation and a key member of the squad sitting just in front of the back four and impressed the Villa faithful in his new position.

I’m a big fan of passing out from the back and to do this at Villa Birkir is your man.

I love you, Birkir (AVFC)

Midfield Engine Room:

Henri Lansbury, what does it take for this man to get into the team? Henri ran rings around the Villa and tormented the Villa defense when he played for Forrest, but we’re yet to see a performance like that from the former Forrest man in a claret and blue shirt just yet.

Henri can certainly be that box to box player that we’ve been starved of for such s long time, with hard crunching tackles, and goals, Bruce HAS to release the shackles and let Henri play, he will reek havok next season.

Goals, Goals and Goals:

To complete the midfield trio, Conor Hourihane. Whilst I’ve admitted I’m not the biggest Hourihane fan, you can’t deny his phenomenal goals tally of 11 last season from midfield. Double digits from a midfielder is phenomenal, however I think this is just the beginning for Hourihane…

(Burton Mail)

If Bruce plays an open and expansive brand of football which we are capable of, and gives players such as Hourihane the lisences to be creative and chase balls down, I can easily see Hourihane reaching at least 15 goals and even 10 assists next season.

What frustrated me about Hourihane was the fact I knew there was more from him, but I’m confident that if he was to slot into this midfield we would see the best of the Irishman in claret and blue.

Surely with a midfield consisting of these three we would walk the Championship? We of course have Glenn Whelan and big Mile Jedinak on the bench too who offer different things, and will be great back up options, but neither for me will make it in our starting team next season.

It’s time we blow teams away, with pace, midfield runners running riot, goals coming from all over the pitch – We are Aston Villa, this is our time. Stand up, make every tackle count, every pass accurate, every shot result in a goal, be a part of the pride.

Up the Villa
